Litter Box Setup: The Details Most Cat Owners Get Wrong

Most litter box complaints — odor, tracking, a cat going outside the box — trace back to setup, not to the litter itself. Before switching products, it's worth checking the fundamentals.

The n+1 rule

The standard guidance from feline behavior specialists: one box per cat, plus one extra. Two cats, three boxes. It sounds excessive in a small apartment, but it's the single most effective change for households dealing with out-of-box accidents.

Boxes in the same corner count as one location from a cat's perspective. Spread them out.

Placement: quiet, but not hidden

Cats want a spot with low traffic and a clear line of sight — somewhere they won't be startled mid-use. That rules out the spot next to the washing machine, and it rules out a cramped closet with one exit.

Keep boxes away from food and water bowls. Cats reliably avoid eliminating near where they eat.

If you have a multi-floor home, put a box on each floor. Older cats especially shouldn't have to navigate stairs urgently.

Litter depth: two to three inches

Too shallow and clumps stick to the bottom, which makes scooping miserable and leaves residue behind. Too deep and you're wasting litter — cats don't dig to the bottom regardless.

Two to three inches is the working range for most clumping litters.

Scoop daily. That's the whole odor strategy.

No litter, additive, or deodorizer outperforms daily scooping. Odor control products manage what's left between scoops; they don't substitute for removing waste.

Plan a full change and box wash periodically — use unscented soap and water. Strong cleaners leave a scent that can put cats off the box entirely.

Covered vs. uncovered

Covers help humans (less tracking, less visible mess) and are neutral-to-negative for cats (traps odor inside, restricts escape routes). If your cat is avoiding a covered box, take the lid off and see what happens before buying anything new.

When to stop troubleshooting and call the vet

Sudden out-of-box behavior in a previously reliable cat isn't a preference problem — it's frequently a medical one. Urinary issues in particular can be serious and can escalate quickly, especially in male cats. If the change is abrupt, book the appointment before you rearrange the furniture.
